The galvanic isolator prevents electrolytic corrosion by blocking low voltage DC currents that enter your boat via the shore power earth wire. These currents can cause corrosion to underwater metals like the hull, propeller, and shaft. Internally, the isolator consists of two diodes connected in an anti-parallel fashion, allowing current in both directions but only above a threshold voltage of about 1.4 VDC. Installed directly behind your boat’s 230V connection, the galvanic isolator’s forward voltage is higher than the potential difference between metals, preventing conduction and blocking electrolytic current. However, if a higher error voltage occurs in the AC circuit, the diodes will allow current through, causing the residual-current device to break the circuit.
